Refusing to stay down

I watched 125+ hours of sports documentaries. Here’s what I found.

The best athletes, the ones who dominate their sport, aren’t just talented. They are relentless.

They don’t just accept setbacks. They expect them.

Ironic as it may seem, the greatest athletes know how to lose.

A bad serve.

A disastrous first half.

A season-ending injury.

These moments don’t define them. Their response does.

What separates champions isn’t if they fail but how they bounce back. Here are two of my favourite comeback stories.

Jack Eichel, Hockey player

In 2021, he was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights following an injury and a contract dispute that sidelined his career. Many doubted whether he would ever return to his best form. Not only did he bounce back, but he also led the Golden Knights to their first Stanley Cup victory in 2023, demonstrating that setbacks can serve as a setup for success.

Justin Thomas, Golfer

In his run at the 2022 PGA Championship, Justin Thomas began the final round seven shots behind. Statistically, this was an impossible position for a comeback. However, instead of crumbling under pressure, he played some of the finest golf of his life, forcing a playoff and securing his second major championship in a dramatic finish.

This isn’t just seen in sports. This is also applicable in business and life.

Every failed pitch.

Every lost client.

Every missed opportunity.

It’s not defeat. It’s feedback.

The ones who make it? They aren’t the ones who never lose. They’re the ones who refuse to stay down.

What’s a setback that made you stronger?

Also, if you love a good sports documentary, tell me your top picks. I’m always looking for my next watch! 👀

The problem with being too data-driven

Are you data-driven or data-informed? Most founders aim to be data-driven. I get the appeal. It sounds rigorous, logical, and objective. But being too data-driven can be a trap. In business, especially startups, you rarely have perfect data. If you are waiting for a complete dataset before making a move,
